eBAY Find – May 2010 Australia

Sadly this photograph does not give us a clear view of this necklace, nonetheless it bears all the hallmarks of Filipino/Palawan cultural production. It also provides further evidence of how deeply etched the "apple seed" misinterpretation is in the Globalised cultural imagination.

If something looks like something it is not always what it appears to be.

I bought this item and am delighted with it! The lady who sold it on via ebay gave me your link as soon as she became aware of it and if the collar is actually ipil-ipil from the Phillipines who cares! It must have taken someone hours and hours to make and that sort of dedication to ones craft deserves recognition and preservation regardless of which native woman gave up her time and energy to make it. Since when has a Philipno womans labour of love been any less valuable than a woman who has an ancestor or two indeginous to Australia????

Yes Anonymous you have bought a real treasure! In a way all the more a treasure for knowing more about its cultural source. In fact it is worth knowing that it was made by a Filipino who may well have received far too little for their skill and labour.

Our point in pointing out the misdescriptions for these necklaces etc. is that there are antique dealers out there fabricating phony histories for these objects. After doing so they are charging large sums for the work.

The Filipino markers need the recognition and a greater reward for their effort, skills and cultural knowledge. The tru8thy deserves a better reward than fiction and here as much as anywhere!

Jewelry is more fun to wear. With the kind of variety available, there seems to be the right kind for every person, occasion, style and budget.
